Police court motorcycle mechanics to curb crime

Police in Chitipa District have engaged motorcycle mechanics to help curb crime and escalate road safety messages.

Chitipa Police station officer Malakani M’bwana said this on Wednesday that it was important to engage the mechanics to raise awareness on road safety and prevent criminal activities linked to motorcycles.

He said: “We specifically target motorcycle mechanics because some motorcycles involved in crimes and accidents are taken to garages where repairs, repainting or modifications are done to conceal evidence.

“So, engaging mechanics will help to ensure that they understand their responsibilities and can prevent their services from being used for illegal purposes”.

Chitipa Police Station traffic officer Charles Maele highlighted key road traffic rules and cited Section 125 of the Traffic Act, which outlines garage owners’ responsibilities.

He said: “The Act is a reminder to motorcycle mechanics that they have the responsibility of keeping accurate records of motorcycles brought in for repairs and coorperating with authorities when motorcycles are suspected to be stolen or involved in accidents.

“Proper record-keeping helps to trace motorcycle owners, assists in investigations and prevents motorcycles from being misused in crimes or accidents.”

Malele further urged mechanics to report any suspicious customers or activities to police.

Speaking on behalf of the mechanics, Philip Mugala commended the police for the awareness campaign.

“The meeting highlighted a number of critical areas. We will follow and cooperate with relevant authorities to prevent accidents and avoid suspicious dealings,” he said.
